| One
of the environmental problems of concern today is the diffuse pollution
from products where each individual product gives very little
contribution. However, a steadily increasing number of products increase
the total burden on the environment. A number of measures have been
taken by the authorities to control polluting effluents from factories
in many countries – it is more difficult to regulate pollution from
products.
The Norwegian textile business has seen this challenge and took the
initiative to establish the Norwegian Textile Panel. This forum consists
of representatives from industry and trading companies, authorities,
NGOs etc.
The Panel works with different topics to influence the textile
business to be more conscious and market more environmentally friendly
products. A number of working groups has been established, and open
seminars are held twice a year.
The textile industry is global, and most clothes and textiles sold in
Norway are imported. Much of the health and environmental consequences
of these products are therefore shown in other countries than Norway.
The use of chemicals in the different production stages from growing of
fibres to the production of ready-made clothing and the working
conditions for those employed in these production stages are subjects of
concern.
Most adverse chemicals are washed out before the finished clothes
arrive in Norway, but there may still be remnants of unwanted substances
in some products. A working group has prepared
a list of substances that
may be used in the production of clothes and textiles, and that should
be given attention. |
